A Quick Comparison

When I first purchased my PS3 I compared the costs of the box and the XBox 360. After upgrades to bring the machines to parity (equal features) they cost the same. It's been quite some time since then and I decided to do another comparison of prices. All prices listed in USD.

Even after upgrading them to bring them to hardware parity, the software is no comparison. The PS3 supports media streaming from any UPnP-compatible software, including many firewall/routers, my Mac (using software to use my iTunes collection and play back video from my Movies folder), and more, whereas the XBox is, to quote Microsoft, "a Windows Media Center Edition extender". Standards-a-go-go!

The only reason I would purchase a XBox 360 at all are: Halo 3, and Mass Effect. Really. Oh, and check out my last post for an interesting statistic about BluRay vs. HD-DVD hardware sales.

And let's not mention the many cases of the RRoD.

Sony PlayStation 3: $573.19

$499.00
Base price of unit.
$75.19
Upgrade from 60GB internal 2.5" SATA drive to 120GB.

Microsoft XBox 360: $899.94

$349.99
Base price of unit.
$179.99
Proprietary 120GB HDD upgrade kit.
$179.99
External HD-DVD high-definition optical drive.
$24.99
Wireless controller recharge kit.
$99.99
External USB WiFi wireless network adapter.
$49.99

$15.00

We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man person perish, yet the inward man person is renewed day by day.

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
